What Does "Discovering" Mean to Me?

What Does ‘Discovery’ Mean?
I am thinking about what discovery means. I think discovery means to find out about something. For example, you may discover that global warming is starting. In my drawing, I am discovering water in a desert, under a lot of sand. That is what I think discovery means.

What Makes an Effective Professional Arcade Game?
I had just recently played the game on Free Arcade called Jumpcat. I chose to play this game because I was trying to see if it worked or not. I am researching what makes an effective arcade game for my Crusie Arcade project. The creator of the game is Scott Griffiths. In this game, you have to have a cat jump over a bunch of obstacles in your way. Some of the obstacles are rocks, trees, helicopters, boulders, and birds. The rules are displayed on the screen of the game, and you have control options. The difficulty of the game is a 3.5, out of a 1-4 star rating. To win this game, you have to go for a high score. If you get a high score, then you submit the score.

If I were to build the game in real life, I would make it out of a cardboard box for the screen, a stick to maneuver a toy cat, and I will keep putting in obstacles one by one. When a boulder comes out, someone else will maneuver the boulder. I think this game was not that expensive since it had simple controls, but I would predict that it cost about $100-$200 to make.

As I said before, the name of the game was Jumpcat. The URL is
http://www.freearcade.com/Jumpcat.flash/Jumpcat.html. I think this makes an effective professional arcade game because the controls work, and it looks like the game was not easy to make. If you had to buy it, it would probably cost $1.00. That is what I think makes an effective and professional arcade game.

Design Brief
What is the Concept Design of My Crusie Arcade Game?
Damian and I have decided to call our arcade game Target Mix. The game is a mix of two games: Basketball and Ball in a Truck. For the Ball in a Truck you roll a ball down a rail and try to get it into a truck or hit the truck. However, if you get it into the truck you get more points. For the basketball game, you shoot a bouncy ball into different cups. The smaller the cups, the more points you get. The rules of the game will be displayed on a sheet of paper on the front of the box for both games. The level of difficulty for both games combined is a 2.7 out of a 4 star rating. You win the game by either getting the ball in a truck or getting a ball in a hoop. If you do win the game, tickets will come out of the ticket slot.
Our blueprint shows on the front of the box where the title of the game is displayed. It is in cut out block letters. For decoration, the box has a little target. It also has a ticket slot and a hole for the ball to roll in. From the top of the box you see the inside of the game, where there are 4 toy trucks for the Ball in a Truck, and hoops for the Basketball game. On the side of the box, the only thing there is our company name, Nicholas and Damian Co.

Our materials to build the game are bouncy balls, toy trucks, different size cups for the basketball, a box, some cardboard, a ruler for the rail, marbles, and tape to tape everything together. It would probably not take that long to build the game, so I believe that it would probably take about 3-6 days in the Discovery Center. One of the problems we foresee for the game design is that the trucks may not have holes in them, so we might have to substitute the trucks with something else.

Praise: Love that it’s two-in-one, willing to risk life and limb in the name in the game, very creative.

Question: Is there a time limit?

Polish: Think about writing regulations on the game so people know what to expect. It may make the game easier to understand.

Student Comment: We made Target Mix two games so it can be more fun for other people, and so it can be more creative. Yes, you are right, we have to risk life when playing the game. We have to watch out for the marbles. Thanks for the comment that says Target Mix is very creative! And no, there is not a time limit, but if someone wants to make it harder they can just ask and they can do it. On your comment about the regulations, we did put some rules on there. However, we may need to update it.

Praise: Like the marbles and throwing from far away. Fun game.

Question: Why did you decide to make two games in one box? Cooler game, 2 games in one.

Polish: I would let one person play the game at a time. Wouldn’t want to get hit by marbles.

Student Comment: Thank you! We made people throw a marble from far away because we thought it was too easy to throw it wherever you like. Also, we made it two games in one because we could not decide on what our game would be. On your comment about only one person playing the game at a time, thanks for the suggestion, but we will not change that. We do that so the line can move along faster. We wear a basket on our heads for protection.

Praise: Very fun! Great imaginations + fun games. I like the different levels of play. Great job!

Question: Why have points and tickets?

Polish: Should the person in the box wear safety gear?

Student Comment: Thank you! We tried our best to make the game, Target Mix, as fun as possible. The reason we used points was so we can determine how many tickets someone will get. Depending on how many points you get will be your amount of tickets. On your comment about the safety gear, we do wear safety gear. We do that so no one will get hit in the head with a marble.

Make It Better

How Can We Make the Crusie Arcade Game Better?

Reflection on Project

What can we do to improve our Arcade Creation?

We could make the ball in a truck car be moved with a string, rather than our hands.

Specifically, how would we do this?

We would attach a string to the truck and then make a hole that goes outside of the box, and we pull back and forth. In basketball, instead of having a person collect the marbles, we could have a box inside the box to collect the marbles when they fall.

Reflection on Process

What did you learn to do with the Crusie Arcade Project?

We learned how to make a successful arcade game.

What do you know now that you didn’t know before doing the Project?

I know how to make a working arcade game without a degree in electrical engineering.

What can you do know that you couldn’t before doing this project?

I can now build an arcade game out of cardboard and other objects.

What did you like about the project that helped your learning?

I liked building the arcade game and finding ways to improve it.

What could have been done differently to help your learning?

We could have used more cardboard instead of just using one box so we could expand the size of the arcade game.

A Final Reflection:

In Discovery Center, I made an arcade game called Target Mix. I am trying to make the game better. One way to make the game better is to not get in the box for the game. For basketball, someone must be in the box to collect the marbles. Instead, we can put baskets all over the floor to collect the marbles. For Ball in a Truck, we could tie a string to the truck and pull it back and forth. This is how I could make my game better. To build the Basketball Game, we put different size cups and taped it to the top of our box. The smaller the cup, the more points you get. For Ball in a Truck, we taped toy cars to tubes, and we made a hole in the middle of our box. We then attached a toilet paper roll to the hole. We then move the trucks back and forth, and you need to roll a marble down and hit the truck. That is how I made my game, Target Mix.
